Density is the number everything else hangs on
One figure — pounds per cubic foot — decides your NMFC class, your reweigh exposure, and often whether a carrier prices your freight from the class tariff at all. Carriers measure it with dimensioners at the dock, so the goal isn't a rough guess: it's computing exactly what their machine will, before they do. This tool shows the working line by line so you can defend the number on a reweigh dispute.
How is freight density calculated?
Total weight divided by total volume. Multiply each piece's length × width × height in inches, times quantity, divide by 1,728 to get cubic feet, then divide total pounds by total cubic feet. The result is density in pounds per cubic foot (pcf).
Why does freight density matter?
US LTL carriers price by NMFC freight class, and since the 2025 changes most commodities are classed directly from density — denser freight gets a lower, cheaper class. Density also drives reweigh disputes: carriers measure your shipment at the dock, and if their density differs from your declaration, the bill changes.
Do I measure the pallet or the freight?
Measure the whole handling unit as the carrier receives it: freight plus packaging plus the pallet, at the extreme points including any overhang. Using net cargo dimensions understates volume, overstates density, and invites a reclassification fee.
