How pallet counts are calculated
A trailer floor is a simple grid: divide the interior width by your pallet's across-dimension for pallets per row, divide the interior length by the pallet's along-dimension for rows, and multiply. The two classic patterns are straight (48-inch side down the trailer) and turned (rotated 90°). Turned loading usually wins on count for standard GMA pallets because 15 rows of 40 inches beat 13 rows of 48 inches in the same 630-inch floor — but weight limits, freight stability and forklift access decide whether you can actually use it.
How many pallets fit on a 53-foot trailer?
26 standard 48×40 pallets loaded straight (two abreast in 13 rows), or up to 30 turned 90° so the 40-inch side runs down the trailer. Double-stacking stackable freight doubles those counts to 52 and 60.
How many pallets fit on a 48-foot trailer?
24 standard 48×40 pallets straight, or 28 turned. A 48-foot dry van has roughly 576 inches of floor length at the same 98.5-inch width as a 53-footer.
Should pallets be loaded straight or turned?
Turned loading fits more pallets but puts the 48-inch pallet stringers across the trailer, which some forklifts and freight types handle poorly, and it can complicate weight distribution. Many shippers load straight for speed and stability unless they need the extra positions.
