Freight density — pounds per cubic foot (pcf, lb/ft³) — decides where your LTL shipment lands on the NMFC freight class chart. Carriers measure it with automated dimensioners at the dock. So measure it yourself first, before the quote, not after the rebill. The math is one division: pounds over cubic feet. Every costly error lives in what you feed it. Follow the five steps below.
Run the Density Calculation: Five Steps
Step 1 — Measure each handling unit at its extremes. Length, width, height in inches. Measure the finished handling unit: pallet, cargo, overhang, any crown on top. Cargo overhangs 2 inches per side? Width is pallet width + 4.
Step 2 — Compute cubic feet.ft³ = (L × W × H) ÷ 1,728
Step 3 — Weigh, including packaging and pallet. The wood pallet counts too: 35–50 lb for a GMA, plus its 5–6 inches of height. Both go in. Weights and heights vary by standard; check standard pallet sizes for the common footprints.
Step 4 — Sum across handling units, then divide.
density (pcf) = total lb ÷ total ft³. Divide totals. Never average per-piece
densities.

Work One Example: Two Mixed Pallets

Density = 1,050 ÷ 130.0 = 8.08 pcf → class 100 (8–10 band). This is why you divide totals: pallet 1 alone is 11.1 pcf (class 92.5), pallet 2 alone is 5.7 pcf (class 175). Neither is your class. The shipment rates as one 8.08 pcf lot.

Where the Number Comes Out Wrong
Measuring the product instead of the handling unit. Your carton math says 12 pcf. The dimensioner sees the pallet, the headspace, and the stretch-wrap crown, and says 9.4 pcf. Class 85 turns into class 100 plus an inspection fee. Measure what rolls onto the truck.
Forgetting overhang. 2 inches of overhang on a 48 × 40 pallet adds ~9% to the footprint, cuts density by that much, and invites damage-claim denials. Fix the carton layout instead (see how many boxes fit on a pallet).
Rounding dimensions down. Carriers round up to the next inch. Declare 47.5 in and the dock reads 48. Quote on rounded-up numbers.
Ignoring cube rules. Some carriers rate a non-stackable half-height pallet as if it filled standard height. Dense, low pallets that forbid stacking can rate worse than the raw math says. Ask about linear-foot and cube rules on borderline freight.
Splitting a shipment to game the bands. Same shipper, same day, same lane gets consolidated at the carrier's discretion. Use the legitimate lever: packaging engineering — denser packing, less void.
Guessing weight from the packing list. Supplier packing-list weights rarely include cartons, dunnage, wrap, or the pallet. Terminals weigh on certified scales. A light BOL weight lets the reweigh alone rerate the shipment even when the class survives. Weigh the finished unit, or add a realistic packaging allowance.
Trace a Reclass: One Importer's Leak
A housewares importer tenders three pallets of boxed storage bins, declared at 12.3 pcf — class 85 — off carton dimensions from the factory spec sheet. At the breakbulk terminal the dimensioner measures the real units: taller (pallet plus crown), wider (an inch of wrap bulge each side). Measured density: 9.6 pcf. The shipment rerates from class 85 to class 100, two bands up.
Now count the corrected invoice. First, the higher base rate for class 100 on the full weight. Second, a W&I inspection fee per the rules tariff. Third, the quiet one: the shipper's contract discount was negotiated against class 85 freight, and repeated mismatches give the carrier grounds to re-price the whole lane at renewal. Move a few pallets weekly and a systematic 85-to-100 error compounds into a four- or five-figure annual leak. The fix took one afternoon: measure five finished pallets, average the real height and footprint, update the BOL template. Reclasses stopped.
Handle the Odd Shapes and Units
Cylinders, drums, and irregular shapes. Density uses the rectangular envelope. Measure a 55-gallon drum as the box it would just fit in (diameter × diameter × height). Round products always compute denser than they look on the floor — the corners you can't fill still count as volume.
Metric inputs. Factories quote cm and kg. Convert before you divide: 1 pcf ≈ 16.02 kg/m³, so a supplier's 150 kg/m³ carton density is about 9.4 pcf. Or convert dimensions to inches and weight to pounds first, then use the standard formula. Mixing systems mid-calculation is a classic rebill generator. Mixed-class shipments. If genuinely different commodities share a BOL, carriers may rate each at its own class — or, if not separately identified, rate everything at the highest class in the load. Itemize when the classes differ.
Boundary densities. A computed 15.1 pcf is class 70 on paper and class 85 the moment an extra inch of wrap shows up. Within a few percent of any band edge, engineer real margin (shorter load, tighter wrap) or quote the lower band and be pleasantly surprised.

What is a good freight density?
For rates: the higher the better. Above 15 pcf (class 70 or lower) is comfortable territory; below 4 pcf you're paying mostly for air.
Do I include the pallet in density calculations?
Yes — both its weight and its height. Density is computed on the handling unit as tendered, not the bare product.
How do carriers verify density?
Automated dimensioners and certified scales at terminals. Mismatches against the BOL trigger reclassification, a corrected invoice, and often an inspection fee.
How do I calculate density for multiple pallets?
Sum all weights, sum all cubic feet, then divide once. Never average the per-pallet densities.
What is a W&I inspection in LTL freight?
Weighing and inspection: the carrier reweighs and re-measures your shipment at a terminal, usually with a dimensioner and certified scale. If the result disagrees with your bill of lading, the shipment is rerated at the measured class and a W&I fee from the carrier's rules tariff is typically added.
What density do I need for class 70?
At least 15 lb per cubic foot on the finished handling unit. The 15–22.5 pcf band rates as class 70; at exactly 15.0 you qualify, at 14.9 you drop to class 85. Build a margin of a few percent so rounding and wrap height can't push you under.
