Overview

CargoSum is a static website. There are no user accounts, no database and no backend that processes what you type into the calculators. Every calculation runs inside your browser, so the cargo data you enter (dimensions, weights, quantities and item names) is never sent to a server, logged, or stored anywhere outside your own device.

Data kept in your browser

CargoSum uses your browser's local storage (a small data store on your own device) for a few settings. Your unit choice is saved under cs-units as metric, imperial or mm. Your theme choice is saved under theme as light or dark, and removed if you switch back to the system setting. Tools with a save feature, currently the Container Loading Calculator, store a calculation only when you press Save: the tool's address, your inputs as a query string (including item names, dimensions and quantities), a short summary label and the time you saved it. The last 5 saved calculations are kept for each tool. These local storage items never leave your device. To remove them, delete them inside the tool or clear this site's data in your browser settings. If you pick a language manually, the site sets a first-party cookie, cargosum_locale, that lasts one year. When you open the site's root address (/), the server reads this cookie to decide which language version to show. A localeSynced flag in session storage records that the language was matched once in the current browser session.

Analytics and advertising

CargoSum does not currently show ads, and no ad units are placed on its pages. The Google AdSense account script does load on every page of the live site (embedded widgets excluded), because AdSense review requires it. We plan to run Google AdSense ads to keep the tools free to use, and this policy has been written ahead of that.

Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your previous visits to this website or other websites. Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits to this site and/or other sites on the internet. You can opt out of personalized advertising (that is, stop ads being tailored to your browsing) in Google Ads Settings. You can also opt out of some third-party vendors' use of cookies for personalized advertising at aboutads.info.

CargoSum uses Google Analytics 4 to understand overall traffic, for example how much each tool is used. GA4 sets two first-party cookies: _ga, which distinguishes users, and _ga_<id>, which keeps session state. By default both expire after two years. For visitors in the European Economic Area (EEA), the United Kingdom and Switzerland, Google Consent Mode sets ad_storage, ad_user_data, ad_personalization and analytics_storage to denied by default, so no analytics or advertising cookies are set. The Google tag still loads in those regions and may send cookieless pings to Google. Visitors elsewhere start with these settings granted. The site has no consent banner of its own; consent is expected to be managed later through a Google-certified consent management platform (CMP) set up in AdSense. Analytics events record only which tool was used and simple actions: running a calculation, rating a result up or down, exporting a CSV, saving or deleting a calculation, and copying embed code. They never include cargo data. For embedded widgets, only the hostname of the page hosting the widget is recorded. Page views are reported without the query string, and when you move from one page of CargoSum to another, the previous page is reported without its query string too. When you change an input, the address bar updates without sending a new page view, and tool pages pass only the site's origin as the referrer. As a result, the figures you enter are not sent to Google Analytics. The site also runs Cloudflare Web Analytics, which Cloudflare Pages adds automatically. According to Cloudflare, it does not use cookies, local storage or any other client-side state, does not fingerprint visitors by IP address or user agent, and reports aggregate metrics only.
