Shipping container dimensions are quoted three ways — nominal ("20ft/40ft"), external (fixed by standard), and internal — and only the internal numbers describe what your cargo actually has to fit. Representative values within ISO 668 tolerances — individual containers vary by a few centimeters with manufacturer and build year. For tight-fit cargo (single pieces within ~5 cm of a limit), confirm the specific unit with your carrier.

How Shipping Container Dimensions Are Standardized

Externally, shipping container dimensions are governed by ISO 668: a 40ft unit is 12.192 m long and 2.438 m wide everywhere on earth, at 2.591 m external height for standard units and 2.896 m for high cubes. That uniformity is the entire point of containerization — every ship cell guide, chassis twist-lock, and crane spreader built in the last five decades engages the same corner castings. What the standard does not pin to the millimetre is the inside: internal dimensions are whatever remains after walls, corrugation, flooring, and door hardware, and those vary slightly by manufacturer and build series. That's why the table below is representative rather than contractual.

Two markings on the unit itself matter more than any published table. The CSC safety approval plate (under the International Convention for Safe Containers) states the unit's maximum gross weight, and the tare weight stamped on the door is the figure that belongs in a Verified Gross Mass declaration — repairs and re-flooring shift tare over a container's life, so the stamp beats the average. Reading the Table Correctly

The door is smaller than the box. Door aperture (234 × 228 cm on standard dry units) is the real constraint for any single piece of cargo. A machine 235 cm wide fits inside a container that it cannot pass through the door of. For over-door cargo, that's what Open Tops (crane loading from above) and Flat Racks are for.

High Cube buys height, nothing else. The 40HC's extra 30 cm adds 8.6 m³ (+13%) over the 40DC at nearly identical tare. For light, voluminous cargo it's usually the best value on the market. For dense cargo that hits payload first, it buys nothing — note its payload is actually a touch lower than the 40DC's.

Payload ≠ what you should load. Max payload is the container's structural limit. Road legs usually bind tighter: US highway rules effectively cap a 40ft's cargo around 19–20 t and a 20ft's around 17–19 t on standard chassis. Booking 28 t into a 40DC is legal on the water and illegal on the truck. Details: container weight limits and VGM.

Reefers are smaller than they look. Insulation and the refrigeration unit cost the 20ft reefer about 47 cm of length, 7 cm of width, and 13 cm of height versus a 20DC — and cargo must stay below the red load line for air circulation. Never plan reefer loads on dry-container dimensions.

What the High Cube's Extra 30 cm Is Worth

The diagram shows why the high cube dominates light-cargo trades. With a common 60 × 40 × 40 cm export carton stacked upright, a standard 40ft fits five layers (200 cm used, 39 cm of dead headroom); the 40HC fits six. Extended across the whole floor, the best pattern yields roughly 500 cartons in a 40DC versus 600 in a 40HC — a 20% gain from a box with the same footprint, similar tare, and typically a modest rate premium. The gain is carton-dependent, not automatic. A 45 cm-tall carton stacks five layers in both boxes — 269.5 ÷ 45 still rounds down to five — so the extra height buys nothing until it completes a layer. That remainder arithmetic is exactly what a packing simulation catches and a volume division misses; more of it in how many CBM really fit per container.

Common Mistakes That Cost Real Money

  • Planning cargo to nominal or external dimensions. A "40ft" container is 12.19 m outside but 12.035 m inside. Crates cut to the external number don't fit, and the discovery usually happens at the warehouse door with the truck waiting — re-crating plus a missed vessel cut-off turns a measuring error into a week or more of delay.
  • Forgetting the door aperture. A machine 232 cm tall clears the 239.3 cm ceiling but not the 228 cm door. The fallback is Open Top or Flat Rack equipment, quoted case-by-case and routinely a large multiple of a dry-box rate — an expensive way to learn that the door, not the roof, is the limit.
  • Quoting reefer loads on dry dimensions. A 20ft reefer holds 28.0 m³ against a 20DC's 33.2. Plan on dry numbers and roughly 15% of the order stays on the dock — split shipments, unhappy consignee, second set of fees.
  • Loading to the payload plate. 28 t in a 40DC is fine at sea and overweight on a standard US chassis. The result is an overweight citation, trans-loading part of the cargo to a second truck, and paying twice for the same mile.
  • Assuming every unit matches the table. For pieces within ~5 cm of an internal limit, request the specific unit's dimensions or a survey. Internal tolerances are small, but so is your margin.

Which Container for Your Cargo?

  • By volume: up to ~26 CBM of cartons → 20DC; up to ~56 → 40DC; up to ~66 → 40HC (see practical capacity for why these are below nominal).
  • By weight: dense cargo past ~19 t often ships better as two 20DCs than one 40DC — axle limits split more comfortably.
  • By piece size: anything exceeding the 234 × 228 cm door goes Open Top or Flat Rack, quoted case-by-case.
  • By shipment size: below roughly 13–15 CBM, shared LCL space usually beats even a 20DC — the trade-offs are in FCL vs LCL.
