"Standard pallet" is a regional specification, not a global one: the rectangle it names changes by destination continent. A footprint mismatch is charged twice — once against racking and handling compatibility at the receiving warehouse, once against unused container volume. The two reference footprints are the GMA 48 × 40 in and the EUR 1200 × 800 mm; the ISO 6780 family below adds the four regional standards that appear on Asian and Australian lanes.
The Two Reference Footprints
GMA pallet (North America) — 48 × 40 in (1219 × 1016 mm). The default in US retail and LTL. Wood build, typical values: ~5.5–6 in tall, 37–48 lb tare, dynamic (forklift-moving) capacity ~2,500–4,600 lb depending on grade, racked capacity ~2,800 lb and rack-dependent. Cargo entering US retail distribution is specified to this footprint in nearly all cases.
EUR/EPAL pallet (Europe) — 1200 × 800 mm (47.2 × 31.5 in). The EPAL-certified exchange pallet. Specification: 144 mm tall, ~25 kg tare, 1,500 kg safe working load. The 800 mm width is set to European truck beds — 2 × 1,200 or 3 × 800 across a 2.44 m trailer. Only the stamped, certified pallet carries exchange value; an uncertified "Euro-size" pallet is the same rectangle without it.
Drawn at a single scale, the area gap reads clearly: the GMA footprint is about 29% larger than the EUR, which sets cartons per layer and how the pallets tile a container floor.
ISO 6780 Footprint Register
ISO 6780 registers six principal footprints for intercontinental trade. None is redundant — each is dimensioned to tile a specific truck bed, container, or warehouse module.

Footprint by Destination Lane
Destination US: GMA 48 × 40. Warehouse racking, pallet jacks, and slip sheets are specified to it.
Destination EU: EUR 1200 × 800 for anything entering exchange networks; 1200 × 1000 is the common ocean-freight choice, since it cubes containers slightly better.
Intra-Asia: 1100 × 1100 where destination handling requires it; otherwise the footprint that best tiles the carton, resolved through the pallet calculator.

Two Specification Decisions, Worked
Case 1 — EU import, EUR against GMA. Input: 600 cartons of 40 × 30 × 25 cm at 8 kg each, Asia to a German DC that accepts either footprint, 180 cm stack limit. Per pallet the GMA leads — 9 cartons per layer against the EUR's 8 (compare the GMA arrangement with the EUR arrangement, same carton and limits). Six layers each yields 54 per GMA pallet against 48 per EUR pallet. The container reverses it: a 40ft holds 25 EUR pallets against 20–21 GMA, so the EUR plan floors about 1,200 cartons per container against roughly 1,130 on GMA — and the EUR pallets return to the German exchange pool rather than becoming disposal cost. Absent a GMA requirement at the DC, the smaller footprint moves more cargo.
Case 2 — one product, two markets. A shipper split between US and EU customers can standardize on the 1200 × 1000 mm industrial footprint: close enough to GMA (1219 × 1016) that most US racking accepts it, and it stows at the same 20–21 per 40ft. Two constraints apply — it sits outside the EPAL 1 exchange system, and some automated US facilities reject anything not exactly 48 × 40. Confirm both destinations first; the spec check is cheap, re-palletizing is not.
Deck Materials and Their Ratings
Wood (stringer or block): lowest cost, repairable, ~40 lb. International shipment requires ISPM-15 heat treatment (HT stamp, under International Plant Protection Convention rules); untreated wood is subject to quarantine at many borders.
Plastic: 15–25 lb, no ISPM-15 requirement, hygienic (pharma/food); 3–5× the cost of wood. Check the racked rating — many plastic pallets rate far lower in racking than on the floor.
Presswood / molded: ISPM-15 exempt, nestable, ~30 lb, low cost; lower stiffness, suited to one-way export of moderate loads.
Reading a Load Rating: Static, Dynamic, Racked
Three distinct figures, routinely conflated:
Static: pallet resting on flat ground, evenly loaded — the largest figure, and the least operationally useful.
Dynamic: under carriage by forklift or pallet jack — about half of static.
Racked: edge-supported in beam racking — the smallest figure, and the one whose failure mode is catastrophic when exceeded.

Specification Errors That Reach the Invoice
Quoting cargo dimensions without the pallet. The pallet adds roughly 15 cm of height and 20–35 kg per unit load. Untreated wood at the border. A missing HT stamp can trigger fumigation, re-palletizing, or return of the full consignment — days of delay plus handling charges that exceed the price gap of compliant pallets.
Reading the static figure as the racked figure. A pallet rated "2,800 kg" static may rack at well under half that. Overloaded beam racking is a collapse risk, and warehouses reject loads exceeding their rack spec.
Specifying "Euro-size" instead of EPAL on an exchange lane. The rectangle is identical, but uncertified pallets are rejected from exchange pools — full pallet price on every trip instead of a one-for-one swap.
Fixing the footprint before checking the carton. A carton that tiles one footprint cleanly can strand 10–15% of another's area. Test the actual carton against both candidates before ordering pallets.
