What Is CBM? Cubic Meters in Freight, Explained

How CBM is calculated, why carriers use it, and how it turns into the price you pay.

What CBM Actually Measures

CBM stands for cubic meter, the standard unit forwarders, airlines and ocean carriers use to measure how much space your cargo takes up. It is not the same thing as weight, and that distinction is the whole reason CBM exists as a pricing input. A container, a truck bed or an aircraft's belly hold has a fixed volume long before it hits its weight limit, so carriers need a way to charge for space as directly as they charge for kilograms. CBM is that unit.

Every quote you get for ocean freight, and most quotes for air and road freight, starts with a CBM figure for your shipment. It determines how many containers you need, whether your cargo qualifies as an LCL (less than container load) shipment or a full container, and — combined with weight — what you actually pay per kilogram or per cubic meter.

How CBM Is Calculated

The formula is simple:

CBM = L(m) × W(m) × H(m) × quantity

Take the outer dimensions of each carton or pallet, convert them to meters, multiply length by width by height, then multiply by how many identical units you have. Sum that across every different carton or pallet type in the shipment and you have your total CBM.

One detail trips up a lot of first-time shippers: carriers measure outer, packed dimensions, not the product's net size off a spec sheet. A product box might read 58 × 38 × 38 cm on the datasheet, but once it is palletized, shrink-wrapped or over-boxed for export, the shipping dimensions carriers actually bill on are larger. Always measure what will physically sit on the truck or go into the container, never the number printed on the product listing.

Unit mistakes are the other common source of wrong CBM figures. Dimensions get quoted in a mix of centimeters, millimeters and inches depending on who wrote the packing list, and a single unconverted measurement anywhere in the chain throws the total off by orders of magnitude, not a rounding error. Pick one unit, convert every dimension to it before you multiply, and double-check any figure that came from a factory packing list rather than your own tape measure.

Worked Example: 100 Cartons at 60 × 40 × 40 cm

Say you are shipping 100 cartons, each 60 cm long, 40 cm wide and 40 cm high, weighing 8 kg apiece — a common carton size for general palletized cargo. Per carton:

0.60 m × 0.40 m × 0.40 m = 0.096 m³

Multiply by 100 cartons: 0.096 × 100 = 9.6 CBM total. Actual (gross) weight is 8 kg × 100 = 800 kg. You can open this exact example in the CBM calculator to see every intermediate figure.

Now compare that against sea freight's revenue ton convention, where 1 CBM is treated as equivalent to 1,000 kg for billing purposes. At 9.6 CBM, this shipment is treated as if it weighed 9,600 kg — nearly twelve times its actual 800 kg. That is a textbook "volume cargo" shipment: light and bulky, billed by the space it occupies rather than the weight on a scale. Three Things Experienced Shippers Watch For

1. LCL Carriers Bill a Minimum of 1 CBM

If you are shipping less than a full container (LCL), most carriers and consolidators apply a minimum billable volume, typically 1 CBM or 1 revenue ton, regardless of whether your actual cargo is 0.9 CBM or 0.1 CBM. A 0.3 CBM shipment and a 0.9 CBM shipment can end up costing exactly the same. If your regular volumes sit well under 1 CBM, consolidating several orders into a single shipment before booking almost always costs less per unit than shipping each one separately and eating the minimum every time. Some consolidators also apply the minimum per line item rather than per shipment, so ask explicitly how the minimum is structured before you assume two small orders will ship together for the price of one.

2. The Volume-to-Weight Conversion Changes by Mode

CBM's 1,000 kg/m³ equivalence only applies to sea freight revenue tons. Air freight uses a much tighter 6,000 cm³/kg divisor (the IATA standard, roughly 167 kg/m³), and express couriers such as DHL, FedEx and UPS typically use an even more aggressive 5,000 divisor. 3. Carriers Re-Measure, and They Round Up

Your booked CBM — the figure you gave your forwarder at quote stage — is not guaranteed to match your measured CBM, the figure the CFS warehouse or consolidator records when your cargo physically arrives. Cargo gets re-measured with a tape or a laser dimensioner at consolidation, and most carriers round each dimension up to the nearest whole centimeter before doing the math. That rounding is small on a single carton but compounds fast across a hundred of them. Build in a small buffer, 3 to 5 percent, when estimating cost from your own numbers, and expect a debit note if your declared CBM comes in meaningfully under what gets measured on arrival.

A Realistic Scenario: An FBA Seller Consolidating in Shenzhen

Here is how CBM drives a real decision. An Amazon FBA seller has three suppliers around Shenzhen, each finishing a production run in the same week. Individually the orders are 420 cartons of 45 × 35 × 30 cm at 9 kg each — about 19.8 CBM and 3,780 kg in total once combined (open this consolidation in the CBM calculator). Shipped separately, each supplier's batch would be quoted as its own LCL shipment, each paying its own documentation fees, origin handling and — for the smallest batch — the 1 CBM minimum.

Consolidated into one booking, the math changes twice. First, one set of fixed charges replaces three. Second, at roughly 19.8 CBM the shipment has crossed the range where a full 20ft container becomes competitive with LCL: suppose the lane prices LCL at $55 per revenue ton — the ocean leg alone comes to roughly $1,090, before the per-CBM origin and destination charges that LCL stacks on top. A 20ft box (33.2 m³ nominal, realistically 25–28 CBM of cartons) swallows the whole consignment with room to spare, often for a comparable all-in price, with no shared-container handling. Container internal dimensions themselves are standardized under ISO 668, which is why the 33.2 m³ figure is stable across carriers.

The lesson generalizes: CBM is not just a number on a packing list, it is the input that decides which booking structure — courier, LCL, or a container — is cheapest for a given week's production. Edge Cases: When CBM Is Not Just L × W × H

A few situations regularly produce CBM figures that surprise shippers, and all of them are worth checking before you commit to a quote:

  • Irregular cargo is billed on its bounding box. A machine with a protruding lever, a rolled carpet, a bicycle — carriers measure the greatest length, width and height, as if the item sat inside the smallest possible rectangular box. Empty air inside that box is billable volume.
  • Soft cartons bulge. A 60 cm carton packed tight with textiles can measure 62–63 cm on a dimensioner. Across hundreds of cartons that bulge typically adds several percent of billable CBM that never appeared on the packing list.
  • Skids and crates count. If your cargo ships on a skid or inside a wooden crate, the skid height and crate walls are part of the measured dimensions — the billed CBM is the crate, not the contents. The volumetric weight guide covers how packaging choices feed straight into cost.
  • Very long or tall pieces can attract surcharges beyond CBM. On many tariffs, single pieces past certain length or height thresholds pay out-of-gauge or overlength fees on top of the volume charge, so a 6-meter profile can cost more than its CBM suggests.

What does CBM stand for in shipping?
